3. MODES OF PERSUASION

"Off the modes of persuasion furnished by spoken words there are three kind. The first kind depends upon the personal character of the speaker; the second on putting the audience in to certain frame of mind; the third on the proof, or apparent proof, provided by the words of the speech itself. Persuasion is achieved by the speaker’s personal character when the speech is so spoken as to make us think him credible"  - Aristotle

Basically there are main 3 modes of persuasion.let us discuss all those three modes of persuasion below:

1. Ethos
2. Pathos
3. Logos

ETHOS
Ethos is a greek word meaning 'character'. Ethos is appeal to the authority and honesty of the presenter. It is how well the presenter convince the audience that he or she is qualified to present on the particular subject. Ethos also used to defines the ideals or the guiding beliefs that describes a community, nation or ideology. It can be done in many ways:

  • By being a notable figure in the field in question, such as a college professor or an executive of an company whose business is that of the subject.
  • By having a vested interest in a matter, such as the person being related to the subject in question.

  • By appealing to a person's ethics or character.
PATHOS
Pathos is an appeal to the audience's emotions. It can be in the form of metaphor, simile or even a simple claim that a matter is unjust. Pathos can be particularily powerful if used well, but most speeches do not solely rely on pathos. Pathos is most effective way when the author or presenter demonstrates agreement with an underlying value of reader or listener.

In addition, the speaker may use pathos to appeal to fear, in order to sway the audience. Pathos may also include appeals to audience imagination and hopes; done when the speaker paints a scenario of positive future results of following the course of action proposed.

LOGOS
Logos means persuading by the use of reasoning. This will be the most important and Aristotle's favorite about which we are going to study. Logos is logical appeal or the simulation of it, and the term logic is derived from it. It is normally used to describe facts and figures that support the speaker's topic.

In my opinion, these three modes demonstrates that how helpful it can be to be professional in  your own field to persuade anyone. In these modes it is clear that reasoning about a particular thing can gain attention of people. For example, if your product is television and you want to persuade people to buy it. For doing this you have to provide reasoning to the people that why they should buy your T.V. For example, persuade them by saying that you are giving one year warranty on this product. In this way people start to think about buying this product. So, these are the things these modes want to demonstrate.

Let me know every one's opinion of these three modes of the persuasion. comment your thoughts on this.
